The SC Bar Law Related Education Division considered many
options to host the summer Institute, as South Carolina is fortunate
to have picturesque mountains, popular beaches, and historic communities
and destinations. After careful consideration and research, The Strom
Thurmond Institute (STI) of Government and Public Affairs housed on
the campus of the Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina, which
is surrounded by scenic mountains and lakes, was chosen. As we all know,
Senator Strom Thurmond had a direct impact on numerous public policy
matters and was supportive of We the People: Project Citizen’s
growth. For these reasons and many more, this location will have the
most direct impact on the Institute’s attendees.
After meeting with Dr. Robert H. Becker, Director and
Professor of The Strom Thurmond Institute, it was discovered that the
housing, facility, resources, and entertainment potential of using the
STI is almost limitless. The Clemson Campus is a virtual town of its
own with all of the amenities. Through Clemson University, there will
be access to classrooms, computer labs, professors on public policy
to speak at the Institute, cafeterias, lodging, on campus transportation,
gyms, botanical gardens, small shops, movie theaters, restaurants, and
many other options.
